Mount CofE Academy

Whole Curriculum Curriculum Rationale

At Mount CofE Primary School, our whole curriculum is designed to provide our diverse community of pupils with a broad, balanced, and enriching educational experience that aligns with the National Curriculum. We have carefully selected a range of specialist schemes of work, including Striver, Kapow, White Rose Maths, and Language Angels, to ensure that our pupils have access to high-quality, engaging, and age-appropriate learning opportunities.

Our curriculum rationale is underpinned by our school's vision and values, which prioritise the holistic development of each child, nurturing their unique gifts and talents, and empowering them to reach their true potential. We recognise the diverse backgrounds and needs of our pupils, with a significant proportion from Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller communities, as well as a high percentage of pupils eligible for the Pupil Premium grant. By adapting the purchased schemes of work to meet the individual needs of our academy community, we ensure that our curriculum is relevant, challenging, and inclusive, providing all pupils with the opportunity to succeed.

The National Curriculum provides a robust framework for our whole curriculum, ensuring that our pupils develop a strong foundation in core subjects such as English, mathematics, and science, while also exploring a wide range of foundation subjects, including history, geography, art, and music. We have carefully sequenced the content and skills within each subject to ensure a coherent and progressive learning journey, enabling our pupils to build upon their prior knowledge and skills as they move through the school.

Our curriculum is aspirational, challenging our pupils to reach their full potential and develop the knowledge, skills, and character needed to make a positive impact on the world. We prioritise the development of essential learning skills, such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity, equipping our pupils with the tools they need to thrive in an ever-changing world.

Whole School Aims

Our whole curriculum is closely aligned with the school's vision and values, which are centered on nurturing the unique gifts and talents of each child and cultivating an environment that celebrates diversity, fosters a deep sense of belonging, and inspires a lifelong love of learning. By providing a broad and balanced curriculum, we aim to unlock the extraordinary potential within every pupil, empowering them to reach beyond the limits of their dreams.

Our curriculum is underpinned by our cherished Christian values of Caring, Hope, Understanding, Respect, Co-operation, and Happiness. These values are woven throughout our teaching and learning, creating an environment that supports the academic, social, and emotional development of our pupils.

Subject Vision

Our curriculum is designed to provide our pupils with a well-rounded education that prepares them for the next stage of their learning journey and equips them with the knowledge, skills, and character to make a positive impact on the world.

In English, we aim to develop confident, articulate, and creative communicators who can express themselves effectively through both written and spoken language. We believe that strong literacy skills are the foundation for success across the curriculum, and we are committed to fostering a love of reading and writing in our pupils.

In mathematics, we strive to develop mathematically fluent and confident problem-solvers who can apply their knowledge and skills to a range of real-world contexts. We recognise the importance of developing a deep understanding of mathematical concepts, and we use a variety of teaching methods and resources to engage and challenge our pupils.

Across the foundation subjects, we aim to cultivate curious, knowledgeable, and well-rounded individuals who can make connections between different areas of learning. We believe that a broad and balanced curriculum, which includes subjects such as history, geography, art, and music, is essential for developing a well-rounded understanding of the world and one's place within it.

Communication with Stakeholders

To ensure the successful implementation of our whole curriculum, we will engage in regular and transparent communication with all stakeholders, including parents, carers, and the wider community. We will utilise a range of communication channels, such as newsletters, parent-teacher meetings, and school events, to share information about our curriculum, its rationale, and the progress our pupils are making.

Given the diverse backgrounds of our pupils, we will also explore ways to tailor our communication to meet the needs of our community. This may include providing translations of key documents, organising workshops or information sessions in multiple languages, and working closely with community leaders to ensure that our curriculum is understood and supported by all.

Addressing Inspection Feedback

The curriculum rationale outlined above directly addresses the key areas for improvement identified in the most recent Ofsted inspection. By implementing a rigorous and sequential approach to the writing curriculum, we aim to develop our pupils' confidence and enjoyment in reading, a key priority for the school.

Furthermore, our focus on ensuring a clear curriculum and strategy for the Early Years Foundation Stage will help to address the need for a shared vision and strategic direction in this crucial stage of our pupils' education. The use of assessment to inform teaching and learning, as well as the continued development of subject leadership, are also central to our curriculum planning and implementation.

Importantly, our curriculum is designed to support the school's efforts to improve attendance and behaviour. By providing a relevant, engaging, and inclusive learning experience, we aim to foster a sense of belonging and investment in the school community, ultimately contributing to improved attendance and behaviour.

Knowledge Organizers

Across school and across the curriculum we use knowledge organizers.  Knowledge organizers are a valuable tool for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Helping students learn and remember

Knowledge organizers help students organize information and make connections between concepts. This helps them remember facts and recall them when needed.

  • Supporting teachers

Knowledge organizers help teachers plan lessons and assess students. They can also help teachers identify knowledge gaps.

  • Helping parents

Knowledge organizers help parents understand what their child is learning and how they can support them.

  • Providing a consistent learning experience

Knowledge organizers can help students transition between learning at school and at home.

  • Helping students build resilience

Knowledge organizers can help students develop strategies to solve problems independently.

  • Making learning more visual

Knowledge organizers can include diagrams and other visual elements.

  • Helping students contextualize information

Knowledge organizers can include timelines that help students understand cause-and-effect relationships.

  • Adding depth and perspective

Knowledge organizers can include quotes from experts or primary sources.

  • Making people think hard

Knowledge organizers can help educators think about what children should learn.

Knowledge organizers can include:

  • Key words and their definitions
  • Important facts
  • Diagrams
  • Methods and skills
  • Timelines
  • Quotes
  • Lists
  • Concept maps
  • Hierarchies

Within our school we embed a progression of knowledge and skills into our wider curriculum subjects to develop each child in each area. This enables children to build on prior skills gained in previous years using small steps and is combined with knowledge organisers for each half term to ensure our children are developing both skills and knowledge as they travel through their learning journey at our school.

The needs of all children are catered for and our curriculum is delivered so that it is accessible to all of the children within our school.
