British Values

Promoting British Values at Mount Church of England Academy

At Mount Church of England Academy British values are reinforced regularly and in the following ways:

Democracy

At Mount Church of England Academy, pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school we educate and provide boundaries for young pupils to make informed choices, through a safe environment and an empowering education.

Children and Young People are integral to building a fairer and more sustainable world for everyone. Courageous Advocacy equips them with the skills, tools, confidence, and opportunity to speak up and take action on issues of justice. Courageous Advocacy is an integral part of the Church of England Education Office's vision for education.

At Mount Church of England Academy we take guidance from information provided by the Children and Young People's hub at Christian Aid.  This is dedicated to resourcing those who work with children and young people, to support their learning, not only to learn about global justice issues, but to provide tips and tools to support them to help shape the world around them through courageous advocacy and campaigning.

Our commitment as a school is to develop a group of children from a range of cultural backgrounds who will form an action group.  This group will begin to sow the seed of courageous advocacy in our school and in turn support others to use their agency with autonomy and freedom on the issues they care about. We will access Christian Aid's learning and advocacy tools on themes and issues we work on in order to empower children and young people to make up their own minds and act accordingly.

Through our curriculum children are taught about, and encouraged to respect, public institutions and services. Children have an annual questionnaire where they are able to put forward their views about the school. There is also a suggestion box for children and parents alike.

The Rule of Law

The importance of laws, whether they be those that govern the class, the school, or the country, are consistently reinforced at Mount.

Pupils are taught from an early age the values and rules of the school. Pupils are taught the value and reasons behind rules and laws, that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken.  Visits from authorities such as the Police and Fire Service help reinforce this message.

Developing leadership is important and children have roles and responsibilities and understand the roles of adults working in and associated to the school.

Individual Liberty

Pupils are given the freedom to make choices, whether through a choice of challenge, how they record their work, or their participation in extra-curricular clubs and opportunities.

Pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and advised how to exercise these safely, for example through our eSafety and PSHE work.

The school's vision of nurturing the "unique gifts and talents of each child" while empowering them to "reach their true potential" demonstrates a commitment to recognising the inherent worth and dignity of every individual.  This is underpinned by the school's core Christian values of "Caring, Hope, Understanding, Respect, Co-operation and Happiness", which cultivate an environment that celebrates diversity and fosters a deep sense of belonging.

Mutual Respect and Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs

Mutual respect is at the heart of our Christian values. Children learn that their behaviours have an effect on their own rights and those of others. All members of the school community treat each other with respect.  By living out our ethos and values every day, we are creating a school community that is a shining example of what can be achieved when a community comes together in God's name.

Mount Church of England Academy creates a fully inclusive environment which ensures that all children make progress both educationally and spiritually.  We ensure that our Christian Values of Caring, Hope, Understanding, Respect, Co-operation and Happiness are clearly embedded in the work that we do.  We provide opportunities for the children to visit places of significant cultural interest, places of worship and we actively encourage visitors from a range of communities and organisations into school.

Mount Church of England is situated in an area of great cultural diversity, we place a great emphasis on promoting diversity with the children. Our RE teaching addresses this issue either directly or through the inclusion of stories and celebrations from a variety of faiths and cultures.  Collective Worship is planned to reinforce this.

Mount Church of England Academy has a robust anti bullying culture and behaviour and safety policies in place.

We support charities that are linked to our children’s needs and plan fundraising and awareness raising activities to support those charities.
