At The Mount C of E Primary School, the White Rose maths scheme is used across the whole school to support the teaching and learning of mathematics. All children from Foundation to Year 6 also access fluency sessions: short bursts of mental maths in order to increase the their mathematical fluency. We have sets of key skills for each year group in Addition & Subtraction and Multiplication & Division, which the children cover.
We are developing the Teaching for Mastery approach within school to ensure that children gain deep conceptual understanding in all of the mathematical areas and that children are accessing age-related content with confidence. The learning is broken down into small steps and builds upon what the children have learnt previously. This includes the use of a concrete – pictorial – abstract approach throughout the maths curriculum (Foundation – Year 6).
Assessment for learning is used throughout maths lessons and aids the teachers in identifying children who may need additional support. These children access maths Intervention sessions either in small group or in 1:1 contexts in order to consolidate their understanding of mathematical skills and processes needed to access the learning in the classroom.
