At The Mount C of E Primary School, the White Rose maths approach is used across the whole school to support the teaching and learning of mathematics. All children from Foundation to Year 6 also access daily fluency sessions to access short bursts of mental maths in order to increase the children’s mathematical fluency. We have sets of key skills for each year group in Addition & Subtraction and Multiplication & Division, which the children cover.
We use a concrete – pictorial – abstract approach throughout the maths curriculum (Foundation – Year 6) to ensure that children gain deep conceptual understanding in all of the mathematical areas and that children are accessing age-related content.
Both pre-learning sessions (during assembly time) and Impact Intervention sessions (in the afternoons), consolidate the children’s understanding of mathematical skills and processes needed to access the learning in the classroom.
As a whole school, we regularly self-evaluate with the children, which increases their ownership of their learning and involves them in the assessment process. This also creates self-awareness of the children’s next steps in learning. In line with this, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 run maths workshops each term. Within these, the children choose which workshops they need to attend based on an assessment of their understanding in various mathematical areas. Our workshops also provide parents with the opportunity to come into school and work with their children to support them in maths.
